We have 17 per cent of school aged children are getting the required amount of physical exercise every day of one hour one hour of movement and only 17 percent of kids are getting it. And what Im asking them to do is think differently about something and that can be for some of them deeply threatening. I would grab Gypsy, my rescue greyhound, and some family heirlooms that might be of very little value to others but are of great sentimental value to me. And it has been outstanding and we are now supporting New Zealand South Australia W.A. I began by asking Bridie how the organisation came about. I was allocated a coach in my state, persisted through that year then won the time-trials in the Oceania and National Championships. And of course theyre related. According to our Database, She has no children. But more of them are mind lovingly great and a privilege an absolute privilege to work in an industry to be paid a salary every fortnight to do something that is affecting change for millions of people is a distinct privilege and I just I know its the job of my lifetime. and theres been so such a lack of diverse thinking that you know these people generally all the same age that probably went to school together and so by by asking them to have a quota and bring women in. Bridie welcome to the program. It meant I was surrounded either by taller, heavier womentheir physical prowess enviableor small, wiry and dynamic lightweights, who were always adding a run or an extra ride to their countless on-water sessions. By 1 July of this year and with an amazing amount of work and meetings and resistance and some yelling by some cranky aggrieved gentleman who were long term president saying I know women but I just dont know any woman who wants to be on this board and I think to myself I know why Barry day we got to 93 per cent of those funded organisations by 1 July who would achieve 40 percent or more and the other 7 per cent of them which is about 10 organisations were working with and meeting with every month and there may be extraordinary general meetings and theyre bringing women in and what we know about this is that whatever your feelings are about quotas I they work be they force an exploration of your existing board which is the best outcome because for so many people theyve just said we just need seven people. Bridie also managed and reached for Rush womens team a national road series cycling team in Australia in 2016. Its not actually how well am I getting along with my family my children my wife my husband my parents. But the Lottery funding in the UK has boosted all kinds of sports that otherwise would never have had the exposure and certainly reached and mentor and Ill know the position in the Olympics particularly Paralympics. And like so many of them I took a chance of you know quitting my job as a physician where I was working behaviour change because I just felt that this was a unique opportunity and remarkable way for me to have an influence over the lives and the outcomes of so many girls and women that I didnt have when I was coming through sport and that so many girls and women who are who have a disability or who are from a multicultural background or from a marginalized communities definitely dont have in Australia. If we were to simplify wed say our three strategic priorities are increasing the number of girls and women participating in sport and aggression. But I had incredibly supportive colleagues and certainly the public service is very good at that. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked in the Industry Recovery Group of Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions, and was then appointed Executive Director for the Public Events Team. You know all those generalised resistance statements that a lot of people have which is Im okay with girls playing footy but I dont want to watch women doing it on TV. Theyre powerful for girls growing up. She is quite reserved. When people talk about the sacrifices required of women in sport, they rarely consider body image and physical health, but if my years in the professional peloton taught me anything, its that this problem requires a far greater level of understanding and care.
